16 September - New Africa Business Council launched in Canberra

The newly formed ACT chapter of the Australia Africa Business Council (AABC) was launched at a dinner on 16 September attended by High Commissioners, Ambassadors and senior diplomatic staff of eight African missions, as well as a number of ACT businesses. The Dean of the African diplomatic corps, HE John Lanyasunya, High Commissioner for Kenya, and Ms Andrea Faulkner, DFAT’s Assistant Secretary Middle East and Africa Branch, addressed guests.

The aim of the AABC, a voluntary organisation, is to promote trade and investment between Australia and Africa and has active branches in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

The 13 African countries represented in Canberra with whom  the AABC interacts regularly are Algeria, Botswana, Egypt, Eritrea, Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe. The AABC also has interaction with other African missions which are accredited to Australia but based in other countries in the region.

The AABC (ACT) will provide a unique opportunity for members to keep abreast of developments in Africa given the presence of the African diplomatic missions in Canberra and the willingness of the diplomatic personnel to interact with, and assist, the AABC in its activities.

We hope to create a vibrant local chapter which will allow ACT businesses to be kept fully informed of business opportunities in Africa as they arise, to introduce potential African investors, and to provide an ongoing contact point between the embassies and the national organisation.

We will also hold regular networking events and host informal seminars to hear from visiting African business leaders and government personnel to give you an insight into current issues in various countries.  The next scheduled event is a drinks networking function on 2 February 2009.
